LET’S TALK - GAIL MOORE
Depression, low self-esteem, anxiety, stigmatization and social isolation, engagement in self destructive behaviors including substance abuse and suicide attempts, problems in interpersonal relationships (issues of trusting others), sexual dysfunctions, vulnerability to re-victimization, physical symptoms ( headaches, asthma, digestive and reproductive problems), and further mental health problems are common among survivors of child sexual abuse and incest.
My name is Gail Moore, and I have at some point in my adult life faced these daunting issues.
If you read my story in the Trinidad Express Woman Magazine, you will know my pain, and how I turned that pain into healing and helping others heal.
My story is the story of a survivor not a victim.
Along with my colleague and friend Renee Cummings we have started this blog to provide and broaden the knowledge base on the impact of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) on communities, and counseling approaches.
We are committed and dedicated to promoting and initiating awareness and healing processes related to child sexual abuse and incest.
Healing is possible for all survivors, it is not a straight and narrow path to healing, however those who are committed to can.
We know that in places such as Trinidad and Tobago this may be difficult because there may be no places to turn for help. However we hope to offer support in starting short term self help groups where survivors can begin to tell their stories to each other in a safe and caring environment.
Our vision is that by 2020 :
No more child sexual abuse in our communities
Women and children are safe
People with healthy boundaries and balance
Help build healthy communities, and end family violence.
Develop choices of approaches that come out of our Caribbean traditions
